Ed’s Story

Ed's excitement for art became evident very early, so his parents enrolled him in a neighborhood art school as a young boy. His passion for art continued through high school and college and he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Northern Illinois University. It wasn’t until a couple years after graduating that he taught himself the art of sculpting wood. Wanting to maintain a unique look and style, he avoided instructional “how to” books and magazines. While his initial works were crude and primitive in style, he began selling his creations at local art shows part time. After a number of years honing his skills and continuing to sell his work part time, sculpting became Ed's full time career.

Ed has now been creating his original wood sculptures for nearly 30 years. His love for old advertising, vintage toys, and humorous pop culture has inspired him to create work that is truly reflective of the past, while presenting it in a very contemporary way. On any given day, you will find Ed in his Illinois workshop carving a vintage circus performer, super hero, or an old world Santa. While subject matter varies widely, every sculpture maintains Ed’s high level of craftsmanship and detail. Whether you purchase a piece that is available on his website or commission him to create a special piece that is truly unique to you, you will be receiving something that is made by hand, with true passion, from start to finish.

Ed’s work is highly regarded in the folk and fine art community. Some loyal collectors return enthusiastically on a yearly basis to add to their collection. His original work resides in collections throughout the country and around the world. While a relatively small amount of artists are sculpting wood these days, Ed’s work continues to push the boundaries of what people may think of when they hear “woodcarving”.
